Introduction:
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has spoken out regarding the absence of thousands of teachers from the December 2023 interviews nationwide. According to a report released by the commission, out of the 28,681 teachers who applied for promotion last year, only 11,231 were successful.
Promotion Procedures and Schedule
TSC clarified that promotions occur once every three years. Consequently, the remaining 17,450 teachers must wait until the next round of promotions expected in 2025.
Alignment with Annual Report 2022/2023
The TSC closely collaborates with the Annual Report 2022/2023, offering a comprehensive assessment of the commission’s operations. The report outlines top achievements, major challenges, emerging issues, and proposed interventions during the period.
Recruitment and Deployment
The report highlights the recruitment of 15,000 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, along with engagement of 26,000 interns, including 4,000 for primary schools and 22,000 for junior secondary schools. This large-scale employment initiative aims to address shortages resulting from the 100 percent transition from primary to secondary school and the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Impact and Training
Nancy Macharia, TSC Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the significant impact of new teachers in achieving key educational goals. The recruitment drive increased the total number of teachers to 364,258. Additionally, 8,367 teachers who attended TSC interviews were deployed from primary to junior secondary schools. Furthermore, Macharia stated that the commission retrained 229,000 primary school teachers and 55,125 junior secondary school teachers for CBC.
