Introducing a Winning Strategy
In a strategic move aimed at positioning Harambee Stars as formidable contenders in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has unveiled a groundbreaking plan.
Investing in Grassroots Soccer
Namwamba, emphasizing proactive measures, urged the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to channel resources into grassroots soccer. This initiative seeks to bolster the national team’s prowess and ensure they don’t merely participate but compete at the highest level.
“We are committed to not just seeing Harambee Stars on the field but seeing them excel. The government stands ready to provide unwavering support,” stated Namwamba during a press briefing.
Prioritizing Youth Development
Highlighting the significance of youth development, Namwamba stressed its non-negotiable status. He reiterated the government’s stance on aligning efforts with FKF to nurture talent from the grassroots level. This approach aims to not only enhance sporting achievements but also stimulate economic growth through sports.
Elevating Sporting Infrastructure
In addition to talent development, Namwamba addressed the imperative of upgrading sporting infrastructure to meet international standards. As part of the overarching plan to co-host AFCON 2027 with Uganda and Tanzania, major investments are underway to enhance facilities across the country.
“We are in the process of elevating our sporting infrastructure to meet global benchmarks. Jamhuri Grounds, a key venue, is undergoing enhancements to ensure it meets the required standards,” affirmed Namwamba.
Ensuring Public Participation
Namwamba emphasized the importance of public engagement in the decision-making process regarding venue selection. Acknowledging the significance of taxpayer-funded facilities, he underscored the need for transparent discussions on venue choices.
“Jamhuri Grounds has traditionally been a focal point, but we are open to exploring alternative venues within Nairobi and beyond. Konza and Nakuru have emerged as potential options,” Namwamba elaborated.
