On Sunday night, the world mourned the sudden loss of Kelvin Kiptum. He’s the current world marathon record holder, and his coach Garvis Hakizimana, who tragically lost their lives in a horrific road accident.

Fatal Road Crash

Reports from the police indicated that the fatal road crash occurred around 11 pm at Kaptagat area along Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine road. Kiptum and Hakizimana succumbed to their injuries on the spot, as a result of the impact of the accident.

Athletic Achievements

Kiptum gained prominence in the athletics world with his remarkable achievements. He made headlines with the fastest marathon debut in Valencia in 2022. In April 2023, he set a course record of 2:01:25 at the London Marathon.

 Record-breaking Feat

In October, Kiptum achieved a monumental feat by breaking the men’s world marathon record, clocking 2:00:35. He became the first man to complete a marathon in under two hours and one minute, surpassing Eliud Kipchoge’s previous record by 34 seconds.

Future Plans

Kiptum’s world marathon record was officially ratified by the international track federation World Athletics just last week. He was gearing up to kick off his new season at the Rotterdam Marathon on April 14 and had aspirations of representing Kenya at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
