TSC Hiring Grade 9 Teachers.Government Initiative to Accommodate Grade 9 Learners in 2025.
  Introduction:
In a bid to address the evolving educational landscape, the government plans to hire a significant number of teachers . This is to accommodate Grade 9 learners in 2025. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced this development in Bungoma. Machogu emphasized that Grade 8 learners will transition to Grade 9 within primary schools.
Infrastructure Development to Support Education
To facilitate this initiative, the government has allocated a conditional grant of Sh3.4 billion to all constituencies. This funds will help in  construction of 6,000 classrooms by the end of the year. This collaboration with the National Government-Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) aims to provide adequate learning spaces. Additionally, the World Bank has granted Sh9 billion to construct an additional 9,000 classrooms. This bringing the total to 15,015 by year-end.
Progress and Preparation
Machogu assured the public that preparations are underway, with the curriculum for Grade 9 learners already prepared by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). The process of creating learning materials is ongoing, with completion anticipated by July, followed by distribution to schools.
Clarification on Misinformation
Addressing misinformation, Machogu refuted claims regarding the development of the Kenya Primary Placement Examination (KEPPE) by the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) for Grade 8 learners. He emphasized that no such directive has been given and that the status quo will be maintained.
Teacher Shortage and Recruitment Efforts
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) acknowledged severe teacher shortages in junior secondary schools, with CEO Nancy Macharia revealing the need for 99,045 teachers against the current number of 56,928. The Grade 8 addition has further exacerbated the shortage to 42,117 teachers. President William Ruto confirmed the allocation of Sh19.7 billion to TSC for recruiting more teachers during Taxpayers Day celebrations in Mombasa. This funding, part of the supplementary budget approved by the National Assembly, has contributed to hiring an additional 56,000 teachers this year.
Recruitment Drive and Commitment
President Ruto highlighted the government’s commitment to recruiting an additional 25,000 teachers, ensuring access to quality education for every child in Kenya. The recruitment drive, a departure from previous approaches, saw 35,790 new teachers employed, including those on permanent and pensionable terms, interns, and hires for junior secondary schools. Currently, TSC is planning the recruitment of teachers to handle the Grade 8 learners who have recently reported to schools.
