Introduction:

Intern teachers in primary, junior, and secondary schools now have access to a specific set of leaves. This was officially sanctioned by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Unlike permanent and pensionable educators, those on contract face limitations in their leave allowances.

Types of Leaves for Permanent Teachers

The TSC delineates a comprehensive list of nine leaves available to permanent teachers. The leaves includes: Sick Leave, Annual Leave, Compassionate Leave, and others. These leaves are typically processed through an online platform, barring exceptional circumstances.

Interns under the TSC are entitled to four types of leaves, each requiring a written application for approval.

 Sick Leave

Intern teachers may apply for Sick Leave, permitting a maximum absence of 90 days. This is  inclusive of weekends and holidays. Application for sick leave is forwarded by the head of the institution, along with relevant medical documentation, to the sub-county director. Sick leave entails one month of full pay, followed by an additional month at half pay if the sickness persists beyond the initial period. Leave without pay is an option if the illness extends beyond two months.

 

Maternity Leave

Maternity Leave is applicable to female intern teachers for a maximum of 90 days with full pay, including weekends and holidays. Similar to sick leave, a three-month written notice to the head of the institution and relevant medical documentation sent to the sub-county director are required.

 

Paternity Leave

Paternity Leave is available to male teachers for a maximum of 21 days with full pay once a year. Intern male teachers are entitled to 14 days of paternity leave with full pay, which includes weekends and holidays. The application process mirrors that of sick leave, requiring documentation such as a copy of the birth notification.

 

 Compassionate Leave

Compassionate Leave is intended for situations involving difficulty or distress, such as serious illness or family emergencies. Intern teachers can take a maximum of 14 days of compassionate leave with full pay, including weekends and holidays. Leave is granted upon application to the sub-county director through the headteacher.

 

Conclusion

The provision of specific leaves for intern teachers by the TSC ensures that they receive necessary time off for various circumstances, albeit with some restrictions compared to their permanent counterparts.
