Teachers Now Demands Refund.Title: KUPPET Demands Refund of Illegally Deducted Housing Levy from Teachers’ Salaries.

Introduction:

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) , is emphatically demanding the immediate refund of the housing levy that has been deducted from the salaries of its members. Union Secretary General Akelo Misori, in a press conference held in Nairobi, criticized the government’s failure to safeguard teachers’ hard-earned pay. The pay   includes their retirement benefits managed by the Public Service Superannuation Scheme (PSSS).

   Union’s Stance:

Misori asserted that Kuppet is determined to protect its members’ salaries and benefits. Considering the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) alleged violation of a court order. The union is exploring various options, including potentially initiating contempt proceedings against TSC officials in their personal capacities.

Disturbing Pattern of Disobedience:

Highlighting a disturbing pattern, Misori accused TSC of conveniently disregarding court orders. More especially concerning the Housing Levy Fund. Despite favorable court rulings, TSC’s recent actions indicate a blatant willingness to disobey the law.

Illegal Deductions Despite Court Orders:

According to Misori, numerous members across the country reported deductions in their pay-slips. This comes despite explicit court orders declaring the housing tax illegal and unconstitutional. He expressed Kuppet’s dismay, stating, “Amid the grave economic difficulties that teachers and all Kenyans face, the last thing we expect from a responsible employer is the making of illegal deductions on workers’ pay-slips.”

Call for Payroll Recall:

Disputing TSC’s claim that the payroll was already prepared, Misori insisted on the possibility of recalling the payroll, citing instances where errors prompted subsequent month payments. He urged TSC to utilize available technology to rectify the situation, emphasizing the gravity of disobeying court orders.
