  Introduction:

The tunnel, situated beneath the bustling Uhuru Highway, sustained damage during the construction of the Expressway, leading to persistent flooding that renders it impassable.

Student Narratives:

Ali Kefa, a student leader, lamented their futile attempts to engage the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) in cleaning the tunnel, emphasizing that promises made last year remain unfulfilled. Kefa asserted the responsibility of the authorities, stating, “This tunnel was destroyed during the Expressway construction; they are liable for this mess.”

Marrion Atieno, another student, highlighted the challenges of crossing alone, often waiting for fellow students to form a group for safety. She appealed to relevant stakeholders to intervene urgently, either by cleaning the tunnel or constructing a footbridge.

Safety Concerns and Consequences:

Kefa raised a concerning incident where a student was recently hit by a speeding car, necessitating emergency treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital. Expressing frustration, Kefa warned of potential student mobilization for peaceful demonstrations if KeNHA fails to act within a month.

Infrastructure Damage:

The surrounding drainage infrastructure has suffered significant damage, exacerbating the flooding issues in the tunnel during rainfall. This compounding problem underscores the urgent need for comprehensive repairs and maintenance.

In summary, the deteriorating state of the tunnel poses a direct threat to the safety of University of Nairobi students, prompting calls for immediate action from relevant authorities to rectify the situation and prevent further harm.
