Unrest at Multi Media University Sparks Controversy Over Leadership Appointments.
Trouble looms at Multimedia University (MMU) as the Universities Academic Staff Union (Uasu) urges Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to annul the recent appointment of Prof Rosebella Maranga as the acting Vice-Chancellor, alongside two Deputy Vice-Chancellors.
Appointment Controversy
The controversy stems from a January 9, 2024, council meeting chaired by Moses Ole Sakuda. Sakuda who is the university council chairman, while Prof Maranga was appointed as acting VC. Prof Geoffrey Kihara and Prof Livingstone Ngoo were also named as her deputies for a six-month term.
 Union’s Concerns
Uasu Secretary General, Onesmus Mutio, calls on the Education CS to revoke not only the Vice-Chancellor’s appointment but also those of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors. He also included the university council chairman, Moses Ole Saduka. Sakuda whose appointment took effect on January 2, 2024. Mutio raises questions about the delay in releasing the names of shortlisted staff from the interview process .

Allegations of Favoritism
Mutio expresses suspicion about the exclusion of Prof Paul Mbatia, a former DVC, from the recent appointments, despite having served alongside Prof Maranga. The union accuses the process of being biased, favoring certain individuals.
 Leadership Vacuum
The union asserts that the appointment of Moses Ole Sakuda as the council chairman, violates the Universities Act of 2012, leading to chaos within the MMU. Mutio emphasizes the need for a substantive council chairman and a Vice-Chancellor to restore stability in the university’s management.

    Expired Terms
Former DVCs Prof Mbatia and Prof Maranga, who previously held key roles in Academic Affairs, Research, and Innovation, and Administration, Finance, and Planning, respectively, saw their terms conclude on December 17 last year. Both had applied to retain their positions through the Public Service Commission (PSC) and were awaiting fresh interviews.
    Unresolved Disputes:
Attempts to resolve the differences between the university and Uasu, led by Sakuda, have proven unsuccessful exacerbating the turmoil within MMU’s leadership. Mutio asserts that Machogu’s appointment of Sakuda was in violation of the Universities Act of 2012. Something intensifying the concerns among the MMU community.
