Empowering Educational Choices for 580,000 Students

In the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination, students achieving grades of C- and below now have the opportunity to pursue certificate and artisan courses of their choice. The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) facilitates this selection process, offering an extensive list of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs.

Transition: Inclusion of Eligible Students

The selection process, administered by KUCCPS this year, broadens opportunities for over 580,000 students. These individuals can now explore various TVET courses based on their cluster points, representing the maximum points attainable in a specific cluster necessary for admission.

Transition: TVET’s Rising Popularity

Over the past three years, TVET courses have witnessed a surge in popularity, with a notable shift from traditional university paths. In 2021, more than 15,540 students who scored C+ and above in the 2020 KCSE opted for TVET courses, encompassing disciplines like plumbing.

Transition: Diverse TVET Offerings

TVET courses encompass a range of fields, including Business-related disciplines. With 13 approved courses, students can choose from areas such as Storekeeping, Accounting Technician, Secretarial, and more. These courses require a minimum entry grade of E, with an average annual cost of Ksh60,000 for parents.

Building and Construction courses, available in multiple TVET institutions, cover areas such as Building Technology, Masonry, Land Survey, and Trade Test in Masonry. Engineering Technology offers 25 approved certificates in areas like Electrical Installation, Electronics, and Automotive Engineering.

Information Technology, another facet of TVET, includes courses like Information Communication Technology, ICT Technician Level 4, and National Vocational Certificate in Education and Training (NVCET) Certificate in ICT. Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy courses, accessible with a minimum KCSE grade of E, are available in numerous TVET institutions across Kenya.

Transition: A Spectrum of Opportunities

This diverse range of TVET courses accommodates various academic interests, providing viable options for students seeking practical and skills-based education. The growing preference for these courses signifies a shift in educational priorities and a recognition of the value of technical and vocational skills in the workforce.
